How Christin Bummer Literally Re-Wrote Her Family History And Unlocked Optimal Health.

I have a lengthy family history of high blood pressure, cholesterol, and obesity. Even in my early thirties, I knew I was headed down a bumpy road. I was at least 15 lbs overweight and my doctor told me that I needed medication to control my blood pressure. I was disgusted at the thought of this because I thought I was eating a healthy diet and I exercised ALL the time!  We’re talkin’ intense workouts like P90x and Insanity!! 💪

I had every reason to just throw my hands up and assume I had no way to control my fate. “You just have crappy genes”, my doctor assured me. But I wasn’t ready to accept it. I had a nagging hope that there was a better answer.

I had a different approach in mind. You see, I had just gone through the following life-changing experience that happened a few weeks before this doctor’s visit.  

It was Memorial Day 2011, and I was on a short backpacking trip with old college friends. Oddly enough, I became sick with Mono the day prior, and yet I decided to go on this overnight backpacking trip anyway. Most people would probably have told me I was nuts. Having a high grade fever and hiking in remote areas with limited water supply isn’t generally wise. But I’m not one to back down from a challenge! 

Little did I know, a lightbulb 💡 was about to be turned on that would change the rest of my life! 
While we were hiking some friends shared a book called The China Study that discusses the link between animal products and human health. They didn’t recall enough details to answer my questions, but it was compelling enough to prompt a book purchase.

Since we were all Cornell University alum, and the author T. Colin Campbell is a Cornell professor, my interest was piqued. The next week I read it cover to cover. 📘

The book opened my eyes to the irrefutable link between caesin (the main protein found in cow’s milk) and cancer. Decades of collaborative research done in the US, China, and around the world found the same results over and over again: Regardless of the levels of exposure to carcinogens, animal protein had the power to turn on cancer cell growth. And when the animal protein was removed?  You guessed it — cancer cell growth was not only turned off, but tumors receded.

I was puzzled, excited, astounded, and a little angry 😡 that I had never heard of this concept sooner.

The BIGGEST takeaway from this book was that “what you put in your mouth directly causes what happens to your body”. Whoa. So simple, yet so powerful. 

By the end of The China Study I was convinced. I didn’t yet know if it would work for me, but I just had to give it a try. 
So when my doctor ultimately suggested that blood pressure script, it was all the motivation I needed to go ALL IN. 

I cleaned up my diet and only ate plants.  I found incredible success!  In a matter of four weeks I went back to the doctor with a fantastic lipid panel in my hands showing that my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure had dropped well into the normal ranges. Not in six months, NOT with medication, but in just four weeks - with the right FOOD!!! 🎉🥑 I learned at that moment that I (and only I) was the one in charge of my health.

That’s not the end of the story.  Hang on, it still gets bumpy. 😕

So I did great on a plant-based diet for a couple of years. Then I started to swerve. I experienced rough patches where I had a really hard time doing what I knew was best. Probably sounds familiar, right?!  Toward the end of my pregnancy I went back to eating a lot of junk food, some of which was vegan, and some that wasn’t.

That’s the part that really bothered me.

See, I have always been an animal lover. Since the age of 5, I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian. I got my first real job at age 12, working at a vet hospital. I worked hard in school and got accepted into Cornell University. I did well in college, worked a part-time job to help pay the bills, and I was also on the varsity Women’s Equestrian Team. But it wasn’t enough to get me in to vet school.
I was devastated at first, but after undergrad I still needed to find a job. I felt either under or overqualified for everything. The only job I could find was working at a pet boarding facility. There I was, scooping poop, wiping out cages, and doing practically the same type of work that I had done when I was 12… My ivy league degree had gotten me nowhere (at least that’s how it felt!). Alas, that job did teach me one lesson I never did learn in all those years of schooling - HUMILITY!  I silently pledged to do my best no matter what task lay in front of me.

That lesson served me well. In less than a year I earned a spot as the Assistant Manager at the flagship location for the entire company. I led a team of 35 people, most of whom outranked me in seniority, experience, and age.
The point is, I spent my life surrounded by animals day in and day out. Not only did I love them, I made a career out of working with them. I became a dog trainer, and I later opened my own dog daycare, boarding, and grooming facility. Pets were treated like members of the family - sometimes even better!  Yet, I never even blinked at eating Sausage McMuffins nor grilled chicken….  I had a complete disconnect between the animals I treated like royalty and those that I treated as disposable commodities. 🐷🐮

AFTER changing my diet for my own health concerns, I opened my eyes to the reality of animal agriculture and I was nauseated. I became an ethical vegan and was strong in my convictions. 

Until I reached the end of my pregnancy, and junk food called my name, whether it was vegan or not...

I distinctly recall going out of my way to stop at Home Depot because we needed a couple things for the house, AND I knew they had Cheetos in the checkout line. 🤷‍♀️ I’d grab a pack, eat it before I even left the parking lot, and ditched the wrapper so I wouldn’t have to answer any questions about it.  I did this often enough that the behavior became disturbing.

WHY is it that I am eating something that I have a moral repulsion to, and I know is terrible for my health??  I was aware and yet I couldn’t stop.  It was the ethical dilemma that made this compulsive behavior so unsettling to me.

I knew there had to be a better way. 🤔

That’s when I found Chef AJ and John Pierre and started to get back on track again, this time for good. I learned about what was de-railing me. I applied a lot of new information, integrated foolproof strategies, and stayed accountable to a group of like-minded individuals! This finally delivered results that I never dreamed possible! 🎆🔓

What took me SEVEN years of trial-and-error to figure out and perfect is what I used to create The Forever Diet! 😃

I have reached and maintained my ideal body weight for over 4 years - all without crazy willpower or intense exercise. When I open my closet now, I know everything fits.  There are no bigger sizes “just in case” and there are no smaller sizes I’m hoping to squeeze into someday.

Many of my friends and family have watched from the sidelines at first, and then jumped right into the plant-based game with us! I started coaching others who needed guidance and the cards started falling into place.  I was able to transform other people’s lives and support my family at the same time.

It’s so rewarding to see people empowered to take control over their own health!  It’s what drives me to keep going.

Sadly, I lost my father-in-law to cancer just a few years into this journey. He was respectful and admired our commitment, but he wanted no part of it for himself. He used to joke that he’d “rather die” than eat like we do (which by the way means eating as many vegetables, beans, starches, and fruit as you want anytime you want...) and unfortunately he never got the opportunity to take those words back and change his mind.


He trusted pills and procedures would save him. He had watched his friends go on medications, take insulin, get stents, and undergo bypass surgeries. He watched a close friend, 20 years his junior, suffer with terminal cancer, and he never wanted any part of that either. In his own case, it was swift and merciless. One day he was leading a bowling tournament for 40 of his closest drinking buddies. 6 weeks later we were standing in shock at his funeral.

He left behind 3 granddaughters whom he adored, and he never got to see grow up.  My own daughter was only 3 months old when he passed.  He had waited the last 15 years of his life for grandchildren, and he only knew them for a fleeting moment. 

I know that I can’t save everyone, but I just have to think that he never really understood the decision he was making. He had the power to turn things around if he had taken action sooner. If only he had understood his diet was fueling cancer, and that our diet may have prevented it, he might have chosen differently.  I don’t think anyone in their right mind would choose steak 🍔 and beer 🍺 over precious time with their loved ones.  But our culture shields us from making that decision, doesn’t it? No one ever really thinks they’re making that decision when they pick up a fork.

It’s time to get real.  If you’re reading this, you have time to make a difference in your life, and you have the opportunity to improve your life experience. It doesn’t matter where you are, what your background is, or how many other times you’ve tried and failed in the past. 

This time can be different. This time you have me, and I won’t let you fail. 🏁🥇
